ABOUT US

Gene is a fourth degree black belt under Michael Jen. He earned his third degree from Professor Jen, his second degree from Jean Jacques Machado, and his first degree from Marco Nascimento. Gene also founded the Stanford Grappling Club in 2008. He has been teaching jiujitsu continuously since then. Gene has led successful programs at multiple gyms. His focus is on developing students on and off of the mat using jiujitsu as a vehicle for personal growth. His deep experience as a teacher, coach, competitor and practitioner is great opportunity for all students regardless of goals or current skill level.

As a competitor he is an America’s Cup Gold medalist and a Pan American Silver Medalist. Gene has competed at all levels of his BJJ studies. His most notable tournament victories include: A GOLD MEDAL at the 2008 America’s Cup; SILVER MEDALS at the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Open, and the 2009 Pan American Championship AND A BRONZE MEDAL at the 2008 American National Championship. We are proud to introduce Gene our dedicated Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor at Folgo With deep expertise and commitment to the art of Brazilian jiu jitsu, Gene brings a wealth of experience to the studio. He is passionate about guiding students of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, on their journey to mastering this dynamic martial art. Gene’s teaching philosophy emphasizes not only technical skill but also a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Join Gene for classes that inspire and challenge you to grow in your practice.

Gene has had the honor of teaching students at all levels of jiujitsu. He has promoted students from white to black belt, understanding the needs of students change as they grow in the art. He helped start the Brown Jiujitsu club in 1998 (now Brown Grappling and MMA link to: https://brownrec.com/sports/2019/2/25/about-gamma), and did the same with the Stanford Grappling Club in 2008 (link to: https://web.stanford.edu/group/grappling/). He has taught jiujitsu at the Renzo Gracie affiliate near San Jose, CA (link to: https://heroesma.com/campbell/), and led the adult jiujitsu program at the Jean Jacques Machado affiliate in Redwood City, CA (link to https://peninsulaselfdefense.com/). 


Gene’s students have included medalists from international IBJJF competitions, people looking to get in better shape, moms, dads, kids, teenagers, tradesmen, doctors, lawyers, nurses, housewives, teachers, accountants, professors, community activists, police officers, firemen, veterans, and college students.
