Gene is a fourth degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, training, competing and teaching for over 25 years.
History and Lineage
1997 While training Hapkido, Gene was introduced to BJJ
1999 Gene earned his Blue Belt under Geoff Balme of Gracie Barra Boston at Brown University BJJ Club
2001 Gene moved to Arizona, and continued training with Gustavo Dantas of Nova Uniao
2004 Gene earned his Purple Belt under Gustavo Dantas, Nova Uniao
2007 Gene earned his Brown Belt under Gustavo Dantas, Nova Uniao
2008 Gene moved to California and continued training with Marco Nascimento of Pitbull Gracie Barra
2010 Gene earned his Black Belt under Adilson “Bitta” Lima, and Marco Nascimento, Pitbull Gracie Barra
2014 Gene earned his 1st Degree Black Belt under Marco Nascimento, Pitbull Gracie Barra
2019 Gene earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt under Jean Jacques Machado
2022 Gene earned his 3rd and 4th Degree Black Belt under Michael Jen, Joe Moreira Association
In 2008 Gene founded the Stanford Grappling Club at Stanford University. He has been teaching jiujitsu continuously since then and has led successful programs at multiple gyms. His deep experience as a teacher, coach, competitor and practitioner provides a great opportunity for all students regardless of goals or current skill level.
As a competitor Gene is an America’s Cup Gold medalist and a Pan American Silver Medalist.
His most notable tournament victories include:
A GOLD MEDAL at the 2008 America’s Cup
SILVER MEDALS at the 2008 and 2009 U.S. Open 2009 Pan American Championship
A BRONZE MEDAL at the 2008 American National Championship.
